Of utmost importance is the setup of the weather station. Sensors have to be placed in such a way that accurate readings can be made without undue influence of external heat sources or effects of buildings or trees in the recording of wind speed. The following shows how my own station is placed  showing precautions taken to attempt to get the most accurate reading.

The temperature and humidity sensors are placed in a Stevension screen type box. This box allows air to freely circulate yet keeps direct sunlight off the sensors. The box is painted white to reduce warming by direct sunlight. The box is mounted four feet above the ground over grass. This is the official height at which all air temperatures are taken word wide

Placing sensors over concrete or tarmac will lead to inaccurate readings. These materials heat up in summer during the day and and can hold heat during the night, the opposite can be true during the winter

The rain gauge is tipping bucket type capable of very accurate readings. It is situated in the open away as far as possible from trees and buildings Sitting twelve inches above the ground. The white plastic pipe seen at the side contains the data wire which runs back into the house.

The anemometer is mounted twenty feet above ground again as far away from tall buildings and trees as possible. This anemometer is capable of reading wind speeds up to 175 mph.  The anemometer also reads wind direction
